Agradecimientos

Acknowledgments

Quisiéramos comenzar reconociendo a los siguientes patrocinadores por su generosa ayuda financiera: la José E. Fernández Caribbean Initiative, The Boehnen Fund for Excellence in the Arts, el Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts, el Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies, el Institute for Latino Studies, y el Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.

A great deal of work has gone into the preparation of this exhibit and the accompanying descriptive catalog, and many individuals have lent their support in varying ways since our first public exhibit of these posters and books several years ago.

We would like to begin by acknowledging the following sponsors for their generous financial support: The José E. Fernández Caribbean Initiative, The Boehnen Fund for Excellence in the Arts, The Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts, The Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies, the Institute for Latino Studies, and the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. A very special thanks is due to the folks at the Snite Museum of Art and the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame for giving us the opportunity to share these posters from our personal collection with the University and South Bend communities in 2011-2012. Gil Cárdenas, Ann Knoll, Chuck Loving, Diana Matthias, Eric Nisly, John Phegley, and Ramiro Rodríguez deserve acknowledgment for their assistance in choosing a representative sample of posters to exhibit (out of a collection nearly 200 works), photographing the posters and books, designing the original version of the catalog, and matting and framing the artwork for the two exhibits that were held on campus. Thanks also to Rachel Schmidt, Curator of Collections and Exhibits at the Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture at California Lutheran University for organizing a very successful exhibit of our posters at that institution in 2016-2017. Our colleague Professor Margaret Power at the Illinois Institute of Technology provided an invaluable contact that made it possible for us to display our collection of DIVEDCO posters and books at the National Museum for Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in Chicago in 2018-20. Thanks to Billy Ocasio, Alejandro Molina, and Bianca Ortiz at that institution for their interest in the collection and for putting together a fabulous exhibit. Thanks to students from Professor Thomas F. Anderson’s class, “Hispanic Caribbean Art, Literature and Film at the Service of the People” for their insightful observations, which have served to enhance the quality of the exhibit and many of the catalog descriptions. We would also like to thank our many friends in Puerto Rico, especially Radamés Rivera, José Correa-Vigier, and Arnaldo González, who have helped us over the last two decades or so to put together an outstanding collection of DIVEDCO posters and books. We also owe our appreciation to Samuel Quiñones and Marisel Flores of the Archivo General de Puerto Rico, for facilitating our access to the DIVEDCO films: it would have been difficult to write useful descriptions of the posters or to understand their political, historical, and cultural contexts without having viewed them.

Lastly, we want to thank our colleagues at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón for making our dream a reality by bringing our exhibit to Puerto Rico. This opportunity would not have been possible without the unconditional support of the University’s President, Gilberto J. Marxuach, and the enthusiasm and dedication of Norma Vila Rivero, Exhibit Coordinator at the Galería de Arte USC, Iván Calderón (Web Developer) and their team. In short, this exhibit is the product of the effort of many people throughout the last decades and we are deeply thankful for their support. Like the founders of the DIVEDCO, and those who dedicated so much time and energy to promoting its educational goals, we believe strongly in the teaching power of art and sincerely hope that all who visit this exhibit come away enlightened. We invite you to make use of this catalog as you stroll through the gallery and enjoy the posters. We hope you enjoy the exhibit as much as we have enjoyed putting it together.
