This book contains a single story by René Marqués, which served as the basis for the 1965 DIVEDCO film, La Noche de Don Manuel [The Night of Don Manuel]. Though the story and the film have noteworthy differences, both tell of an opinionated local boss, Don Manuel, who discovers the importance of democratic values by attending a town meeting in his rural village. After having spent years making most decisions largely on his own, Don Manuel is surprised to find that he actually prefers to attend meetings where everyone, including women and children, has a voice. The booklet and the film touch on many of the program’s central themes: the importance of self-sufficiency, the fertility of the land, the merit of a democratic spirit, the value of strong leadership, the pressing necessity of building a space where townspeople can organize cultural events.
