Los casos de Ignacio y Santiago, 1953

Libros para el pueblo, No. 5
6 1/2" x 9 1/2"

The Cases of Ignacio and Santiago, 1953

Books for the people, No. 5
6 1/2" x 9 1/2"

This book contains two stories by René Marqués that encouraged rural Puerto Ricans to embrace their right to express themselves freely and to take part in the decisions that affected their local communities. The plights of Ignacio and Santiago, two illiterate farmers who are afraid to voice their opinions during community meetings that are led by intimidating local bosses, would have been familiar to many inhabitants of rural towns, where important decisions were often made without consulting the local population. This attractive book boasts 21 full-page illustrations by Rafael Tufiño and José Meléndez Contreras. In his cover illustration, Tufiño chose the iconic image of a “democratic circle” in the courtyard of a rural hut. These informal meetings, which were typically held outdoors, were open to all community members, and came to embody the inclusive and egalitarian spirit that the DIVEDCO promoted.
