Los derechos del hombre, 1957

Libros para el pueblo, No.10
6 1/2" x 9 1/2"

The Rights of Man, 1957

Books for the People, No.10
6 1/2" x 9 1/2"

The uninspired cover of this book belies its many interesting texts and abundance of eye-pleasing illustrations by several of Puerto Rico’s most accomplished graphic artists and many of the DIVEDCO’s key illustrators including Lorenzo Homar, Rafael Tufiño, Eduardo Vera Cortés, Isabel Bernal, José Manuel Figueroa, José Meléndez Contreras, and Carlos Raquel Rivera, among others. At over 100 pages, this is one of the longest books in the series, and it contains dozens of articles and anecdotes that trace the history of human rights from prehistoric times, to ancient Rome, to the French and American Revolutions, through the 1950s. The final section focuses on human rights in Puerto Rico and the island’s “struggle in the 20th century”.  In the introduction, the team of authors – led by René Marqués – stresses that “the rights of men are also those of women,” a point that is the focus of the next book in the series.
